We use advanced Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) systems with our CNC machinery providing rapid and accurate machined graphite components. Finishing processes, such as coatings, impregnation and cleaning round off the product portfolio.

Our graphite machining workshop also uses a bespoke dust extraction technology by Torit to optimise operation conditions and increase running time of graphite production.

Olmec's Gate Eclipse ECL-460 CNC Lathe Process For Graphite Rollers

In this video, we are showing the machining process and production of a graphite roller that is used in the glass industry. The machine used in the video is a Gate Eclipse ECL-460 CNC Lathe with an 8 point rotating tool turret.

Graphite requires to be machined without lubricants, the machining process therefore produces high volumes of graphite dust. Graphite dust is conductive and abrasive, therefore extraction of the graphite dust at source is vitally important. This extraction allows tolerances to be met and to and helps keep the conductive and abrasive graphite dust away from any critical parts of the CNC machining equipment, from servo’s to PCB boards. We use a sophisticated extraction system using Torit®/Donaldson® equipment and heavy duty ducting to maintain a clean working environment.

We have an extraction arm inside the enclosure, placed as near to the cutting point as possible. We also have a point of extraction that pulls some of the graphite dust through the head of the machine.

Doing this, helps us to extract the graphite dust, especially if we drill through a part and need to bore it to a finish size. The first part of the program is to face the material, this is done with a tungsten carbide turning tool. Normally a PCD turning tool would be used. We will be turning the component with a spindle speed of 2250rpm and a feed rate at 0.15mm per revolution.

The second operation is to drill the part using a pecking cycle and a 15mm diameter drill to a depth of 75mm. The spindle for this operation will be running at 1500rpm and a feed rate of 0.17mm per revolution and with a peck distance of 5mm.

For the finishing part of the program, we will have the spindle running at 2500rpm and a feed rate of 0.11mm per revolution; this will give us the fine finish that the customer requires.

If we don’t get the top quality finish on the graphite part then this could be noticeable when the client produces their glass components, there is a possibility it could leave noticeable markings on the glass which the client couldn’t use.

When the program is finished, all we need to do is to saw cut it to an appropriate length so we can machine face it to the required length.
