How graphite is used in the aluminium industry

Why graphite is the ideal material

Casting rings

Used in the production of aluminium billets, these rings are precision-machined to retrofit moulds for casting.

Applications: Metal casting (e.g. centrifugal casting, hot top casting)

Why graphite? High porosity and permeability, easy to machine, resistant to thermal shock

Rotors and shafts

Fluxing tubes

Components in systems used to degas (disperse) hydrogen from molten aluminium during the smelting process. This reduces the number of pores in the metal and ensures the surface is clear and smooth-looking.

Applications: Degassing systems

Why graphite? Resistant to extreme heat, resistant to oxidation, easy to machine

Cooling tables
(run-out tables)

The process of creating and purifying aluminium involves heating graphite until the aluminium is flexible and then forcing it through a shaped opening in a die. An extrusion press is used to do this.

The extrusion press has a front and back plate made of layers of graphite sandwiched together with an epoxy resin. When the extruded aluminium comes out of the press, it is guided into the run-out table.

Applications: Extruded aluminium is used to make window frames and shutters, cables, electrodes, plastic injection moulding parts and so on.

Why graphite? Resistant to extreme heat, self-lubricating, non‑stick, high melting point

Graphite uses in the aerospace and defence industry

Aerospace Industry
Because graphite is light and strong and can withstand extreme temperatures, it is widely used in the manufacturing of complex components for space shuttles and military aerospace vehicles. Learn More

Graphite uses in chemicals and petrochemicals

Many processes in the chemical and petrochemical industries involve the pumping, stirring and transportation of corrosive, toxic or explosive products. Graphite’s resistance to corrosion and wear mean it is ideal for these applications Learn More

Graphite uses in PV, semiconductors and optical fibres

Electronic Graphite Applications
Global computerisation demands ultra-pure forms of graphite for electrical components and circuitry. As automation increases, so will the demand for graphite in electrical systems and circuits. Learn More

Graphite uses in the glass and fibreglass industry

Glass & Ceramics Industry
Applications in the glass and fibreglass industry demand products with high electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and excellent performance at extreme temperatures. Graphite passes the test. Learn More
